Address registration in Spain (Empadronamiento)

After moving to Spain, many people inevitably have to deal with registering their address — empadronamiento. Without it, it can be difficult to arrange many documents and services, for example, enrolling children in school, opening a bank account or accessing healthcare.

Registering your address in Spain — empadronamiento

The term empadronamiento may sound like something complicated, but in practice everything is much clearer once you understand what documents you need, where to apply and how the process works.

What documents do you need to register your address in Spain

To register your address, you need to prove your identity and your address of residence. The exact list of documents depends on your situation and the requirements of your Ayuntamiento.

Main documents:

  • Identity document — passport, DNI or another valid identity document. For foreigners, a passport or TIE will be suitable.
  • Document confirming residence at the address — for example, a valid tenancy agreement, proof of ownership or another document confirming your right to use the property.
  • Registration application — hoja padronal, which is completed during the registration process. Depending on the municipality, you may be able to download it in advance or obtain it when submitting your documents.

If the property belongs to someone else or the tenancy agreement is not in your name, you may need authorisation from the owner or another person who has the right to use the property, as well as a copy of their identity document. In some situations, the Ayuntamiento may request additional proof of address.

An NIE is not required to register your address. A foreigner can be registered using their passport if it proves their identity, while the other documents confirm residence at the stated address.

Before submitting your application, it is worth checking the requirements of your Ayuntamiento: they may vary slightly depending on the municipality and your particular situation.

How to register your address in Spain

Address registration is handled by the Ayuntamiento where you live. Before your visit, you need to prepare the documents and check exactly how applications are accepted in your municipality: in many cities, you need to make an appointment (cita previa) in advance, while elsewhere you can apply without an appointment or submit your application online.

On the appointed day, you go to the Ayuntamiento with your prepared documents and submit your application. A member of staff will check the details and register you at the stated address. If any documents are missing or you need to provide additional proof of residence, you will be told about this when you submit your application.

If you are registering your entire family at the same time, everyone does not have to attend in person. Parents can register their minor children without the children being present, but they will need documents confirming the family relationship and the parents' authority to act on their behalf. For children under 14 who do not have their own identity document, the Libro de Familia or birth certificate can be used; for children over 14, an identity document will be required.

If one of the adult family members cannot attend in person, you need to arrange authorisation for them to be represented. The form can be obtained from the Ayuntamiento or downloaded from its official website.

How long does the process take and what document will you receive

If all the required documents are in order, registration is usually completed without any additional checks. If the Ayuntamiento has questions about the address or other details, the municipality may carry out an additional check, in which case the process will take longer.

After registration, you can obtain proof of registration — volante de empadronamiento or certificado de empadronamiento. The volante confirms your registration details and is suitable for many everyday procedures. The certificado is an official document and may be required where documentary proof of registration is needed.

If you need a certificate for a specific procedure, it is best to check in advance which document you will be asked to provide. In some cases, government authorities may obtain your registration details directly from the municipal register, so a separate certificate will not be necessary.

What to do when you change your address

If you move to another municipality, you do not need to deregister from your old address separately. You register at the Ayuntamiento where you now live, and the information about your new empadronamiento is passed to the previous municipality, where your previous registration will be closed automatically.

If you move to another house or flat within the same municipality, you need to update your registration. To do this, you submit an application to change your address in the padrón to the Ayuntamiento, together with documents confirming your residence at the new address. The old registration does not remain active — the information about your place of residence is simply updated in the padrón.

After moving, it is best not to delay updating your registration: the information in the padrón should correspond to your actual place of residence.
