Spain is famous for many things — not only its sea, cuisine and vibrant festivals, but also rare natural phenomena.
One of them will take place on August 12, 2026 — a total solar eclipse that can be seen right here in Spain.
According to experts, this will be one of the best places in Europe to observe the total phase of the eclipse.
🌑 A summer all of Spain will remember: where to see the solar eclipse in 2026
Spain is preparing for one of the rarest and most beautiful events — on August 12, 2026, the country will be covered by a total solar eclipse.
For a few minutes, the day will turn into twilight, the temperature will drop slightly, and instead of the sun, a dark disk with a glowing corona will appear in the sky. And the best part — all of this can be seen right here.
📍 Where in Spain the eclipse will be best visible

The path of totality will pass through the north and center of the country — from Galicia to the Balearic Islands. Cities such as Burgos, Zaragoza, Valencia and Bilbao fall within this zone.
If you are in Madrid, here’s a great tip 👇
- Burgos — about 2.5 hours by car (perfect for a 1–2 day trip)
- Soria — around 2 hours, fewer tourists and a very atmospheric place
- Teruel — a bit further, but here the eclipse will last longer (up to 1 minute 40 seconds)
By the way, a small historical fact: Burgos was once also the capital of Spain — although not for long, but still. So a trip here is not only about space, but also about the country’s history (and if you enjoy such topics, we have a separate article about the capitals of Spain throughout different periods 😉).
This is a great reason to plan a small trip — the idea of “going to see the eclipse” is already becoming popular.
🌇 What if you stay in Madrid?
Even if you don’t go anywhere, you will still see an almost total eclipse. The light will noticeably dim, and the atmosphere will become very unusual — especially closer to sunset.
But if you want the full “wow effect,” it’s better to head a bit north.

✨ A small idea for a perfect day
Here’s how you can turn it into a mini adventure:
- morning — a walk around a new city
- afternoon — a café or picnic
- evening — watching the eclipse
And this is no longer just a trip, but a memory you’ll remember for years.
💛 The Spain we love
We are used to Spain as a country of festivals, the sea and endless sunshine (by the way, if you’re looking for travel ideas, check out our articles about traveling in Spain and lesser-known cities).
But sometimes it reveals a completely different side — quiet, beautiful and a little magical.
And a solar eclipse is exactly that kind of moment.
🌌 Is it worth planning a trip?
Yes — and it’s better to do it in advance. Interest in the event is already growing, and closer to August, good locations may become crowded.
But if you plan it right, it could become one of the most unforgettable experiences of living in Spain.
